Henry Peter Bosse Photographs

photographs of Henry Peter Bosse
Born in Germany, Bosse was a mapmaker and photographer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the late 1800s, as the Corps transformed the Mississippi River ... changing the "Father of Waters" that Mark Twain described into the commercial thoroughfare we know today.
Dr. Will received a copy of Bosse's photographs from the University of Minnesota Board of Regents. The gift recognized his distinguished service to the board and his tradition of hosting university officials on his boats.
Bosse's work was celebrated in his day but fell into obscurity after his death. His work was rediscovered in the 1990s and now is prized by collectors and museums. Dr. Will's book is one of the few volumes of Bosse's work known to exist.
We are honored to share with you some of Henry Bosse's photographs from Dr. Will Mayo's collection.
