Everyone needs a place to relax ... to unwind with family and friends ... to think about the important things in life.

For Dr. William J. Mayo, that place was the Mississippi River. From 1910 to 1938, he owned three boats - the Oronoco, Minnesota and North Star. Each was a marvel of technology and design. More importantly, these boats represented the values of the Mayo family.

During their journeys on the river, Dr. Will and his brother, Dr. Charles H. Mayo, hosted people from many walks of life. They also discussed the future of Mayo Clinic ... setting a course we still follow today. Near the end of his life, with a characteristic act of generosity, Dr. Will sold the North Star and directed the proceeds to help pay for the care of needy patients.
