Mayo Clinic is a member of the North Central Cancer Treatment Group. This national network of cancer centers investigates experimental treatments to develop effective approaches for rhabdomyosarcoma. Specialists at Mayo Clinic are among the nation's leading cancer researchers, developing protocols that become the recognized standard procedures nationally and internationally.
As part of the Children's Oncology Group (COG), Mayo Clinic researchers study children affected by rhabdomyosarcoma (cancer of the skeletal muscle). This cancer is more common in children than adults. Largely due to the work of COG and the Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma Study Group, the recovery rate for this disease is 80 percent, compared to 25 percent in 1972. IRSG strives to further improve cure rates, continue developing therapies that are increasingly safe, and learn more about the biology of rhabdomyosarcoma.
