Mayo Clinic has a long history of research on retinal diseases and cancers of the eye. Mayo was one of the first centers in the nation to use a technique called transpupillary thermotherapy for the treatment of cancer of the choroid, which lies behind the retina. Mayo physicians have developed other treatments for melanomas of the eye as well. The large numbers of patients who seek care at Mayo Clinic are an aid to research evaluating new treatments.
