- Female gender: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is up to twice as common in women than in men
- Pregnancy
- Family members with RLS
- Iron deficiency
- End-stage kidney disease
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Use of some medications, such as:
- Antidepressants
- Sedating antihistamines
- Centrally active dopamine-receptor antagonists such as some anti-nausea drugs
