Obstetrics & Gynecology in Minnesota

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a common disorder in women. It occurs when the endometrial lining on the inside of the uterus which is usually shed each month with the period grows outside of the uterus. Endometriosis is commonly located on the outside of the uterus, tubes, ovaries, bladder, but can be found at distant sites. The cause of endometriosis is unknown.

Endometriosis is associated with infertility and may cause scarring, pelvic pain and pain with intercourse. It is usually diagnosed and treated with laparoscopy. In addition to surgical therapy several forms of hormonal therapy have been used to manage pain. There is no cure for endometriosis; approximately 20 to 50 percent of women have a recurrence within five to 10 years of treatment.
