REM Sleep Behavior Disorder

Risks

Factors which increase the risk of having REM sleep behavior disorder:

  • Male (80 to 90 percent of REM sleep behavior disorder patients are male)
  • Middle to older age
  • Neurologic disorders, especially Parkinson's disease, Lewy body dementia or multiple system atrophy
  • Alcohol withdrawal
  • Use of certain medications, especially antidepressants
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Narcolepsy
