Pulmonary Valve Disease

Diagnosis

At Mayo Clinic, an experienced team of heart care specialists work together to diagnose pulmonary valve disease. In addition to a thorough physical examination and history, diagnostic tests can help identify the type of pulmonary valve disease, its severity and the treatment needed. Tests may include:

  • Chest X-ray — shows the size and shape of the heart and lungs
  • Electrocardiogram — measures the heart's electrical impulses
  • Echocardiogram
  • Transesophageal echocardiogram — uses a tiny sound device inserted down the esophagus to produce more-detailed images of the heart
  • Exercise test — measures the heart's response to physical activity
  • Cardiac catheterization
  • Computerized tomography (CT)
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
