The Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., comprises one of the largest psychiatric treatment groups in the United States. The department includes more than 65 psychiatrists and psychologists, representing every aspect of psychiatric medicine. Specialists provide expert care to children, adolescents and adults who have mental, addictive and emotional disorders.
People from all walks of life and from around the world come to Mayo Clinic for psychiatric care. Specialists in the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology offer comprehensive evaluations, which assess all of a patient's concerns, physical and psychological. Department members work together with physicians in other medical specialties to address all of the patient's care needs. Psychiatry and Psychology specialists regularly collaborate with specialists from Neurology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Mayo Clinic Sleep Center, Mayo Clinic Transplant Center and Mayo Clinic Executive Health Program.
Most patients are treated on an outpatient basis. Several inpatient programs are offered at the 108-bed Psychiatry Treatment Center that adjoins Saint Marys Hospital.
Staff in Psychiatry and Psychology are also active in education and research, which support patient care by contributing knowledge and innovation to the practice of medicine. The department has trained hundreds of new mental health care specialists over the last half century. Also, many department members conduct medical research in a wide range of topics, including psychogenomics, Alzheimer's disease, depression, anxiety and addictions. (See research.)
