Prostate Cancer

Symptoms

In most cases, early stage prostate cancer does not produce symptoms. Symptoms that do occur may be similar to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate common in older men. A physician can determine whether symptoms are caused by BPH or prostate cancer.

Signs and symptoms of either condition may include:

  • A sudden need to urinate
  • Persistent, dull pain in the lower pelvic area
  • Difficulty starting to urinate
  • Pain during urination
  • Weak urine flow and dribbling
  • Starting and stopping of urine flow
  • A sensation that the bladder was not emptied during urination
  • Frequent urination at night
  • Blood in the urine
  • Painful ejaculation
  • General pain in the lower back, hips or upper thighs
  • Loss of appetite and weight
