Symptoms
In most cases, early stage prostate cancer does not produce symptoms. Symptoms that do occur may be similar to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate common in older men. A physician can determine whether symptoms are caused by BPH or prostate cancer.
Signs and symptoms of either condition may include:
- A sudden need to urinate
- Persistent, dull pain in the lower pelvic area
- Difficulty starting to urinate
- Pain during urination
- Weak urine flow and dribbling
- Starting and stopping of urine flow
- A sensation that the bladder was not emptied during urination
- Frequent urination at night
- Blood in the urine
- Painful ejaculation
- General pain in the lower back, hips or upper thighs
- Loss of appetite and weight
