Prostate Cancer

Treatment in Minnesota

All of the diagnosis and treatment options for prostate cancer described in these pages are available in Minnesota.

Surgery
Urologists at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota perform 700 to 950 prostatectomies each year. The Department of Urology has surveyed all its surgical patients annually since 1966 (a total of more than 14,000 patients) to learn about the outcomes of prostate cancer surgery. Their research shows a high success rate in treating prostate cancer. A few highlights:

  • Of more than 14,000 men who have had surgery at Mayo Clinic to remove the prostate gland between 1966 and 2002, the cancer-specific survival was over 90 percent at 10 years.
  • Of the men who had prostate cancer treated at the Mayo Clinic by radical prostatectomy using the retropubic approach between 1987 and 2000, not a single death from prostate cancer occurred among men whose cancer was detected by PSA and whose cancer had not spread beyond the prostate. (Only 1 percent of patients were lost to follow up.)

Radiation Therapy
Many clinical trials involving radiation therapy are available to patients diagnosed with prostate cancer, but many of these trials often require that patients not have any prior treatment.

Brachytherapy
Mayo Clinic urologists and radiation oncologists in Minnesota have treated more than 1,500 patients with brachytherapy and continue to follow those patients to learn about long-term results of treatment.
