Mayo Clinic has made important contributions to PBC over the years. Mayo was one of the pivotal sites where ursodeoxycholic acid was first tested. Mayo researchers are currently studying new treatments for fatigue and Sicca syndrome and new medications for patients with an incomplete response to ursodeoxycholic acid. Researchers are investigating medications to slow disease progression, the effectiveness of current medications, the effects of liver transplantation and causes of the disease. They are also investigating medications for treatment of PBC-related diseases such as osteoporosis.
