Pituitary tumors

Research

In many people, small tumors of the pituitary gland that lead to an excess release of ACTH (Cushing's syndrome) are very difficult to see with current imaging methods. Researchers tested the large 3T (Tesla) MRI, which is now available at Mayo Clinic, providing a better alternative for viewing these tumors.

Other studies include:

  • The role of molecular genetics in the development of tumors arising from the pituitary gland
  • Optimizing the diagnostic testing for Cushing's syndrome and acromegaly
  • Examining the efficacy and potential side effects of stereotactic radiosurgery
  • Evaluating the side effects of medical treatments

Mayo Clinic's large database of people with all types of pituitary tumors contributes to advances in diagnosis and treatment.
