Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Minnesota

Research

As with education, the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation is committed to rehabilitation research excellence. We believe that our care must be proven to be effective through a scientific approach. We are currently active in research in a variety of areas including: osteoporosis, back pain, sports medicine, wound care, pain relieving modalities, traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury.

The Traumatic Brain Injury Model System (TBIMS) project is a prospective, longitudinal multi-center study examining the course of recovery and outcomes following traumatic brain injury (TBI). In 1998, the Mayo Clinic was designated by the National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) as a TBIMS, one of only 17 in the nation.

Researchers at Mayo have completed animal studies that are the first steps in showing that nerves can regenerate in the spinal cord system.

Read about spinal cord research on Mayo Clinic's research web site.
