Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Minnesota

Inpatient Care

The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Mission Statement is to provide the highest quality of diagnostic and rehabiltiation services to optimize and promote wellness through an integrated practice supported by programs in education and research. Care on the rehabilitation unit is designed to maximize the patient's independence and assist with transition back into the community.

Inpatient care occurs in Mayo's Comprehensive Rehabilitation Unit, a 47 bed, state-of-the-art facility located in the Mary Brigh Building at Saint Marys Hospital. The unit is designed to provide a comfortable atmosphere for patients and their families.

Patients with disabilites whose functional performance can be realisticially improved within a predictable time period, through intensive accepted rehabilitation measures may be admitted to the unit. Patients must require intensive rehabilitation nursing care in the hospital setting, along with the services of other disciplines in rehabilitation. It is expected that patients be able to participate in three hours of therapy per day. Therapies provided in the inpatient setting include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and recreational therapy.

Inpatient care programs include:

  • Spinal cord rehabilitation
  • Brain rehabilitation
  • Stroke rehabilitation
  • Neurological disorders rehabilitation
  • Major multiple trauma rehabilitation
  • Complex medical disorders rehabilitation
  • Cancer rehabilitation
  • Transplant rehabilitation
  • Orthopedic rehabilitation
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Pediatric rehabilitation
