Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Overview

Mayo Clinic specialists in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) help restore movement and function to people disabled by disease or injury. PM&R physicians (called physiatrists — pronounced fizz-EYE-uh-trists) create therapy plans that consider the unique needs, abilities and objectives of each patient. Physiatrists work closely with a team of physical therapists, occupational therapists and other rehabilitation professionals to develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Your PM&R team may offer treatment options that include physical modalities such as heat or ice, acupuncture and therapeutic exercise to improve function.

More than 50 PM&R specialists provide inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation care at all three Mayo Clinic locations. Children are treated only in Minnesota.
