Peyronie's Disease

Overview

Urologists and specialists in men's health at Mayo Clinic are experienced in caring for patients who suffer from Peyronie's disease. In addition to providing clinical care, physicians at Mayo Clinic conduct research to find solutions to Peyronie's disease.

Diagnosis

Mayo Clinic urologists specialize in comprehensive evaluations of men with Peyronie's disease. Hard plaque can be felt in the penis during a physical examination. It may be necessary to inject medication into the penis to induce an erection. Ultrasound of the penis is also used as a diagnostic tool to reveal whether fibrous tissue has developed.

Treatment Options

Urologists at Mayo Clinic use the latest advances in drugs and surgical techniques to treat Peyronie's disease. Surgeons at Mayo perform specialized surgical techniques including Nesbit plication and graft repairs. Some patients may be eligible for a clinical trial that involves injecting drugs into the penis to dissolve the plaque. Read more about Peyronie's disease treatment options.

About Peyronie's Disease

Peyronie's disease is a condition in which a layer of hard material called plaque builds up under the skin of the penis. This layer of plaque most commonly causes pain and bending in the penis during erection, and may also cause indentations in or shortening of the penis. In some cases, the changes in the penis shape make intercourse painful or impossible. Peyronie's disease mostly affects men between the ages of 45 and 60, but can occur at any age. Older men and men who have diabetes are more likely than others to get the disease. The cause of Peyronie's disease is not known, but researchers believe it may result from injury during intercourse, trauma to the penis as a result of surgery, genetic factors or a malfunctioning of the immune system.
