Urinary Tract Infections

Diagnosis

Physicians typically diagnose urinary tract infections by analyzing a urine sample from the child. Diagnosing abnormalities in the urinary tract usually requires more specific testing, such as:

Voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG)

An X-ray test that can help diagnose urinary tract infections associated with a condition called vesicoureteral reflux, which obstructs the flow of urine from the bladder to the kidneys.

Ultrasound

This noninvasive test examines the kidney and bladder using sound waves. This test shows shadows of the kidney and bladder that may point out certain abnormalities.

Excretory Urogram or Intravenous Pyelogram

This X-ray test can identify abnormally large or small kidneys, and/or blockages in the urinary tract.

In Minnesota, X-rays are done by board-certified pediatric radiologists in a child-friendly environment. Parents can stay with their children during the X-ray procedures.
