Many disorders of childhood have an inherited or genetic cause. The Department of Medical Genetics at Mayo has trained specialists who work with other members of the pediatric health care team to determine if a child or adolescent has a recognized genetic syndrome. This can allow planning for the child's current and future needs. Genetic counseling may be possible for other family members.
