Most physicians consider pancreatic cancer inoperable if the tumor is attached to the portal vein. Mayo Clinic is one of few medical facilities in the United States that offers removal and reconstruction of the entire portal vein. The capability to perform this procedure permits a larger percentage of patients who have pancreatic cancer to have a potentially curative operation.
