Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville began offering pancreas transplants in spring 2000. The Jacksonville program has at its disposal the resources of Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., which has one of the largest referral centers for diabetes care in the world.
This treatment involves specialists in the Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation Program. The Transplant Center is located on the third floor of the Mayo Building on the Mayo Clinic campus at 4500 San Pablo Road.
For appointments or information, call the Transplant Center at (904) 956-3200 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. E-mail mcjkptransplant@mayo.edu.
In most cases, transplant recipients must stay close to the hospital for a time following transplantation. Mayo has a limited number of long-term housing units nearby.
These units are furnished one-bedroom hotel suites with a kitchenette and a living area. Each unit has two double beds and a pullout sofa. There is a laundry facility and outdoor pool at the hotel complex. A free shuttle service to Mayo Clinic, grocery stores, pharmacies and shopping centers is also provided.
Cost information can be obtained from the transplant social worker during evaluation.
