Orthopedic Surgery in Minnesota

Research

More than 20 doctors and scientists in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery receive research funding, with about $7 million in annual funding. Research involves laboratory research, clinical trials and other clinical research in virtually every aspect of musculoskeletal pathology.

The first Food and Drug Administration-approved artificial hip was implanted by a Mayo orthopedic surgeon in 1969. Mayo Clinic orthopedists have also pioneered treatments for bone cancer, complex wrist injuries, injuries to the growing parts of children's bones, and have developed artificial joints for every major joint.

The Mayo Clinic Total Joint Registry contains information on the outcomes of nearly all of the more than 100,000 joint replacements that have been done at Mayo Clinic since 1970. It is the largest registry of its kind anywhere.
