Ophthalmology

Overview

Specialists in the Ophthalmology Departments at Mayo Clinic offer patients a full range of eye care, from routine eye examinations to complex surgical procedures. Mayo Clinic ophthalmology and optometry specialists have expertise in managing all eye problems, including cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, corneal and eye surface disease and crossed eyes.

They have special expertise in cancer of the eye, diseases of the eyelids and orbit, vitreo-rentinal diseases and neuro-ophthalmological disorders. Mayo Clinic eye care experts also offer refractive laser surgery, cosmetic eye surgery and contact lens services. Full-service optical shops are available in Florida and Minnesota.

Mayo Clinic specialists work closely together to understand and address each patient's needs. At Mayo Clinic, treatment for eye problems related to other diseases — such as diabetes and autoimmune or thyroid disease — is coordinated among specialists. Patients benefit from the collective experience and wisdom of all specialists with expertise on their condition, including physicians from ophthalmology, endocrinology, oncology and otorhinolaryngology (ENT).

Ophthalmology department members train new eye care specialists and conduct medical research. Members are involved in national multicenter research studies, clinical studies and basic science research. Their efforts support patient care by contributing new knowledge and innovation to the practice of medicine.
