The Department of Ophthalmology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., has 30 staff members, including three Ph.D. researchers. In addition, there are 12 ophthalmology residents and several fellows in either clinical or research training.
Ophthalmology is the study of the structure and function of the eye. Ophthalmologists diagnose eye conditions and diseases, and treat patients who have them by prescribing medications or performing surgical procedures. They also perform refractions, prescribe corrective lenses and perform other tests to help maintain good vision.
The goals of the Department of Ophthalmology at Mayo Clinic are to provide outstanding medical and surgical eye care, to promote understanding of eye conditions and diseases, and to conduct research to advance knowledge in ophthalmology.
