Total ankle arthroplasty offers pain relief for arthritis

With improvements in implant technology and surgical technique, use of total ankle arthroplasty for debilitating end-stage ankle arthritis is expanding. Properly selected patients experience pain relief equivalent to that from ankle arthrodesis, and perhaps even better functional outcomes.

Advanced arthroscopic techniques for hip benefit range of pathologies

More patients with a wider range of hip disorders are now able to undergo the arthroscopic approach. Conditions treated with advanced techniques include gluteus medius repair, internal snapping hip syndrome, treatment of the capsule and femoroacetabular impingement repairs.

Research

Total Joint Registry aids study of hip implant performance
A 20-year study of hip implants from the Mayo Clinic Total Joint Registry focused on 20 types of uncemented acetabular components in 9,584 total hip procedures. Results showed that long-term implant survival differs among types of components.

Arthroscopic elbow contracture release restores extension in elite athletes
Mayo Clinic orthopedic researchers studied the results of arthroscopic capsuloectomy or osteocapsular arthroplasty on 24 elite athletes whose primary complaint was lack of terminal elbow extension. Results showed surgery improved all elbows (n = 26 in 24 patients).
