Mayo Clinic Will Host Symposium on the Role of Medical and Health Care Education in Reform Policy

Thursday, February 12, 2009

ROCHESTER, Minn. — On April 26-29, Mayo Clinic will host a symposium on how medical and health care education must be transformed to achieve true health care reform. The three-day gathering will bring together leaders in health care delivery, medical and health care education, and research as well as medical, nursing and health sciences students, to explore the policy changes needed to create a high-value, high-quality health care system.

Symposium topics include:

  • Defining a vision for medical and health care education
  • Financing medical and health care education
  • Realigning the health care training system toward coordinated patient-centered care

There will be scheduled speakers including Darrell Kirch, M.D., president and CEO, Association of American Medical Colleges; Murray Kopelow, M.D., CEO, the Accreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education; Tenley Albright, M.D., director, Collaborative Initiatives, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and Lucinda Maine, Ph.D., executive vice president, American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.

This event is Mayo Clinic Health Policy Center's first in-depth look at medical and health care education as part of health care reform. At the symposium, attendees will participate by offering reform ideas, comments and asking questions. Using audience response devices, participants will rank reform ideas and immediately learn the group's priorities. All participants have a say in the final recommendations, which will become a guide for further action toward medical and health care education reform.

Over the last two-and-a-half years, Mayo Clinic Health Policy Center has gathered thousands of national thought leaders and other stakeholders in health care for a series of events to help develop new, consensus-driven "cornerstones" to guide the reform process. These cornerstones — create value, coordinate care, reform the payment system, and provide coverage for all Americans — will serve as the framework for discussions of medical and health care education reform during this symposium.

Registration is $200. Click to view the full schedule of symposium events. Attendees can register online or download a registration form to mail. Click here for more information about the Health Policy Center.
