Mayo Clinic National Symposium on Medical and Health Care Education Reform, April 27-28

WHAT: National Symposium on Medical and Health Care Education Reform Mayo Clinic Department of Education and Mayo Clinic Health Policy Center (HPC) are convening nationally-known leaders in medical and health care education to develop recommendations that will transform education to best facilitate health care reform.

Results of the MD Connector Student Competition, cosponsored by the HPC, will be announced at noon on Tuesday, April 28. Three groups of students are finalists in the competition that sought student input to medical and health care education reform.

BACKGROUND: In 2006, Mayo Clinic Health Policy Center held the first National Symposium on Health Care Reform, convening national leaders from health care providers, patients and families, patient advocates, insurance industry, government, academia, pharmaceutical and medical device industry, and small and large businesses, to reach consensus on priorities and action steps for health care reform.

Four cornerstones for health care reform were agreed upon: Coordinating Care, Creating Value, Reforming the Payment System, and Providing Insurance for All. A series of national forums and a second symposium followed which provided detail and direction for the four cornerstones.

Reforming the medical and health care education system is critical to teaching and training health professionals that will support the four cornerstones of reform and enable continued progress to better care at affordable costs for patients.
