JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Mayo Clinic and the University of North Florida are honoring the occasion by hosting the 5th annual "Upbeat Pink: A Musical Tribute to Breast Cancer Survivorship" concert on Sunday, October 11, at 4 p.m. at the UNF Lazzara Hall in Jacksonville.
The concert features the UNF Wind Symphony, conducted by Dr. Gordon Brock, and the UNF Chorale, conducted by Dr. Cara Tasher. This year's event also will feature a special performance by the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Butterman. Special guest Dr. Edith Perez, internationally recognized breast cancer specialist and researcher at Mayo Clinic in Florida, will also attend.
An Upbeat Pink musical tribute celebrates breast cancer awareness month and is a prelude event to the third annual "26.2 with Donna: The National Marathon to Fight Breast Cancer" scheduled for Feb. 21, 2010 in Jacksonville Beach. It is the first marathon devoted exclusively to raising funds for breast cancer research. The Donna Foundation will again donate a majority of the proceeds from the marathon to the Mayo Clinic to fund ongoing breast cancer research programs. More than $708,000 was raised overall by last year's event.
The Upbeat Pink concert is open to the public, with tickets priced at $30 for adults and $5 for students. Children under 12 are free. A portion of the ticket proceeds will go to UNF student scholarships and breast cancer research. For more information, call the box office at 904-620-2878.
