Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix named 2008 Top Hospital

Mayo Clinic Hospital only Arizona hospital named by Leapfrog

Tuesday, September 30, 2008

PHOENIX - Mayo Clinic Hospital has been named among only 33 hospitals in the U.S. as a 2008 Top Hospital, ranked by the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. The survey is recognized as the nation's premier hospital patient safety evaluation tool. Of the 33 hospitals named, seven are children's hospitals.

The Leapfrog rating system provides an up-to-the-minute assessment of a hospital's quality and safety initiatives and asks hospitals about their performance in four crucial areas, or "leaps":

  • Prescriptions are entered into computers linked to medication error prevention.
  • The hospital performs a number of high-risk procedures skillfully, including coronary procedures, pancreatic resections, esophagectomies and bariatric surgery.
  • Intensive care units (ICUs) are staffed by qualified specialists.
  • The hospital has safety practices and policies in place to reduce harm and errors.

In naming its selections, Leapfrog recognizes Mayo Clinic Hospital for its "commitment to extraordinary quality and safety efforts."

The survey is the nation's premier hospital patient safety evaluation tool and provides consumers and health care purchasers with up-to-date assessments of 1,220 participating hospitals in terms of their quality and safety.

Results for all hospitals participating in the 2008 survey are available at www.leapfroggroup.org.

Mayo Clinic Hospital, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary since opening in October 1998, is the only Arizona hospital named by Leapfrog in its 2008 list. The list is based on 1,220 hospitals that responded to the Leapfrog Hospital Survey as of Aug. 31, 2008.
