ROCHESTER, Minn. — January's Rosemary and Meredith Willson Harmony for Mayo Program features a variety of musicians and styles. Patients, visitors, staff and the Rochester community are invited to attend the live concerts each Monday from 12:10 to 1 p.m., unless otherwise noted. Inpatients can view performances on televisions throughout Rochester Methodist and Saint Marys hospitals. The schedule is:
Jan. 5: Twin Cities Hot Club will perform gypsy jazz in Barbara Woodward Lips Atrium, subway level, Rochester Methodist Hospital, Charlton Building, 10 Third Ave. N.W. The group revives the musical styling of gypsy jazz legends Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli and their quintet, the Hot Club of France, which originated prior to World War II. Formed in 2004, the Twin Cities Hot Club recreates the famous la pompe (the pump) that distinguishes this romantic brand of acoustic jazz, in addition to gypsy bossa nova, musette, bolero and swing. The group performs at jazz festivals, area attractions and on Minnesota Public Radio.
Jan. 12: Artaria String Quartet will perform classical string music in Nathan Landow Atrium, subway level, Gonda Building, 100 Third Ave. S.W. The group's refined and thoughtful style has brought the quartet critical acclaim in Europe and throughout the United States. This concert will include selections from Joseph Haydn's "Sunrise" Quartet and Robert Schumann's "Clara" Quartet. The group originated in Boston but now is based in St. Paul. The name Artaria derives from the Italian family that published the premier issues of many quartets written by Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven.
Jan. 19: Darnell Davis & The Remnant will perform a special concert honoring Martin Luther King Jr. at 7:30 p.m. at Autumn Ridge Church, 3611 Salem Road S.W., Rochester. Founded and directed by Davis, the community-based gospel ensemble has a musical style that extends across traditional, contemporary and urban landscapes. Established in 2004, Darnell Davis & The Remnants is comprised of seasoned professionals from the gospel industry. The latest recording by the ensemble, a former Grammy nominee, is "No Compromise."
Jan. 26: Century High School's Honors Orchestra will perform in Phillips Hall, Siebens Medical Education Building, first floor, 100 Second Ave. S.W. Directed by Julia Workman, the auditioned ensemble includes 20 students. The performance will feature "Andante Festivo" by Jean Sibelius; "Drifen" by Shirl Jae Atwell; "One Hand, One Heart" by Leonard Bernstein, arranged by Robert Longfield; "Mantras" by Richard Meyer; and "St. Paul's Suite, Jig and Finale" by Gustav Holst.
Sponsored by Mayo Clinic Center for Humanities in Medicine, the Rosemary and Meredith Willson Harmony for Mayo Program is coordinated by Choral Arts Ensemble of Rochester. The series is generously funded by Rosemary Willson in memory of her late husband, Meredith Willson, who wrote the Broadway musical "The Music Man." The gift is made in gratitude for the couple's care at Mayo Clinic.
