Mayo Clinic announces four Harmony for Mayo concerts in November

Monday, October 29, 2007

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Harmony for Mayo provides a weekly concert for Mayo patients, employees and the Rochester community to gather for high-quality music. There is no charge for admission and concerts are typically held on Mondays from 12:10 to 1 p.m., unless otherwise noted. Concerts are performed at various locations around Mayo Clinic's campus. November's concert schedule is:

Nov. 5: Med City Brass of Rochester will perform in Barbara Woodward Lips Atrium, subway level, Rochester Methodist Hospital, Charlton Building, 10 Third Ave. N.W.

The group will perform arrangements for brass quintets written by Morley Calvert, Viktor Ewald, Samuel Scheidt, Peter Warlock and Dmitri Kabalevsky. Med City Brass includes David Adolfson, trombone; Corey Henke, French horn; Christopher Jankowski, trumpet; Mark Woeste, tuba; and Ellis Workman, trumpet. The group performs at private social events, area churches and for community events.

Nov. 12: A group of five area performers will present "Sentimental Journey," a musical review of tunes from the 1940s. The concert will be held in Hage Atrium, subway level, Siebens Medical Education Building, 100 Second Ave. S.W.

The concert will feature Suzi Stier-Waletzki, Laurie Helmers, Charron McLeod, Michael Garner and Rob Johnson, all of southeastern Minnesota. "Sentimental Journey" uses well-known tunes from the 1940s to capture the feelings of Americans during that tumultuous era. Stier-Waletzki and Helmers collaborated on the musical arrangement for the performance.

Nov. 19: The Rose Ensemble will perform for the annual Mediation & Memorial concert at 7:30 p.m. in Saint Marys Hospital Chapel, Domitilla Building, first floor, 1216 Second Street S.W.

The special performance is entitled "Slavic Wonders: Feasts and Saints in Ancient Moscow, Prague and Krakow." Founded and directed by Jordan Sramek, The Rose Ensemble is based in the Twin Cities. The group uses historical instruments and vocal sound to connect listeners to the spirituality and humanity of ancient traditions. The performance blends tales of folk heroes and saints with a 12-part motet from the Russian Orthodox tradition that involves the movement of voices against one another, works from the Polish Renaissance that use two separate choir groups and chants of medieval Bohemia.

Nov. 26: The Honors Choirs of Southeastern Minnesota will perform in Barbara Woodward Lips Atrium, subway level, Rochester Methodist Hospital, Charlton Building, 10 Third Ave. N.W. This concert will feature the Concert Choir, a group of 61 singers in grades 10 through 12 who come from 20 regional high schools. The performance will include a selection of holiday songs and other choral music from a variety of genres. The Concert Choir is one of five ensembles that make up the Honors Choirs of Southeast Minnesota, a nonprofit organization that draws 285 youth singers from 27 communities in the region. The group is directed by Michael Culloton.

Sponsored by Mayo Clinic Center for Humanities in Medicine, Harmony for Mayo is coordinated by Choral Arts Ensemble of Rochester. Initiated through a generous financial gift from Mr. and Mrs. Tomas Furth of Caracas, Venezuela, and New York City, the music series adds to the healing environment of Mayo Clinic.
