Fortune names Mayo Clinic to 100 Best Companies to Work For® list

Third consecutive year on Fortune's list of American companies

Tuesday, January 10, 2006

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — For the third consecutive year, Fortune magazine has named Mayo Clinic to its list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For® in America, the magazine's annual compilation of companies that "rate high with employees."

Announced today by Fortune magazine, the list ranks Mayo Clinic 89 among the 100 companies, and 31 among 38 large employers (10,000 employees or more).

"We are proud to receive this recognition for the third year in a row. It is a tribute to the dedication of our entire medical, nursing and allied health staff," says Victor F. Trastek, M.D., CEO and chair, Executive Board at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. "We are committed to providing the highest quality care to our patients, through a collaborative approach."

"We are honored to receive this recognition because it is earned by those who work here," says Denis Cortese, M.D., president and CEO of Mayo Clinic. "One of the reasons we've been successful over time is that our organization is made up of individuals who aren't satisfied simply to rest on a legacy — individuals who treat each day as an opportunity to improve and to make a difference in the life of a patient, a visitor or a colleague."

Fortune relies on two assessments when choosing its 100 best companies: an evaluation of the policies and culture of each company, and the opinions of the company's employees. Employee opinions, which account for 70 percent of a company's score, are collected through a survey of 400 randomly selected employees. Mayo Clinic employees in Rochester, Minnesota, Jacksonville, Florida and Scottsdale and Phoenix, Arizona were asked about issues such as attitudes toward management, job satisfaction and camaraderie.

The magazine also considered employee demographics and diversity, benefits and compensation, work-life balance opportunities, and leadership and management engagement with employees. Of some 1,500 companies initially participating, 466 completed the evaluation process to be considered for the 2006 list.

Mayo Clinic and the other recipients of the recognition will be featured in the Jan. 23 edition of Fortune, available on newsstands Jan. 16.
