Mayo Clinic Cancer Center invites you to include these educational programs, events and support groups on your community calendars. They are designed for people diagnosed with a chronic illness, their family members and friends, and supporters of cancer care and research. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Women's Cancers 2006: Merging Science and Care
Annual event focusing on current topics in women's cancers — treatment, promising research and ways to deal with cancer and its effects. Registration is required for both events. Call 507-266-4886 for more information or e-mail Romayne Thompson.

Creative Renewal: Workshops for Wellness
These interactive workshops give participants unique outlets for expression in a reflective, supportive environment that fosters learning. Workshops are held Thursdays, and topics vary. No registration is necessary.

Women's Cancer Program — Strengthening Healing
The Women's Cancer Program sponsors the Strengthening Healing series, sessions that address different ways to cope with cancer and to heal emotionally. Each month, a different topic is featured. Classes are held Tuesdays. No registration is required.

Topic: Strengthening Healing: Beading and Breast Cancer Awareness — Using beading for relaxation; also a special project designed to assist in breast cancer awareness/self-screening.

Topic: Strengthening Healing Through Creative Writing — Writing helps both our emotional and physical health. Learn new ways to use journaling, poetry, memories, stories and other forms of writing.

Heroine Portraits
Excerpted from her book Heroines: Transformation in the Face of Breast Cancer, this exhibit of black and white photographs by Jila Nikpay focuses on 21 Minnesota women diagnosed with breast cancer. Each portrait is accompanied by a poem used by Nikpay to illustrate the woman's transformation. This event is one of several at Mayo Clinic during October which highlight breast cancer awareness.

Answers about Clinical Trials
A half-hour question-and-answer session for people considering clinical trial participation as a well volunteer, cancer patient, or due to another medical condition. The session also may interest family members of potential clinical trial participants. No registration is necessary.
