Mayo Clinic Cardiologist Begins Service as American Heart Association President

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Raymond Gibbons, M.D., a cardiologist at Mayo Clinic and a professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, will serve as president of the American Heart Association (AHA) for its 2006-07 fiscal year beginning this month.

Dr. Gibbons has been an AHA volunteer for more than 20 years. As president, he will serve as chief volunteer scientific and medical officer, responsible for medical, scientific and public health matters.

He is a member of the association's board of directors, strategic planning task force, and science advisory and coordinating committee.

Dr. Gibbons' research at Mayo Clinic is focused on the use of stress testing and imaging in the treatment of heart disease. He is the author or co-author of more than 250 scientific publications and serves on the editorial boards of eight journals, including Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, Journal of the American College of Cardiology and Annals of Internal Medicine.
