SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Mayo Clinic has received the 2005 Arizona Society for Human Resources Management (AZ SHRM) Workforce Diversity Award in the category of Large Employer. The award was presented at the 2005 Diversity Leadership Alliance (DLA) Conference held Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Phoenix Civic Plaza. The award, which is based on organizational diversity and inclusion practices, celebrates Arizona businesses that have best practices in employment inclusion. Companies who are multi-state were encouraged to apply for the award, along with all local Arizona employers. However, the entry was evaluated on your practices and achievements in Arizona only.
The DLA (link opens in new window) was founded in 2002 by several major companies in Arizona. The DLA is a non-profit organization whose membership represents diverse businesses in the Valley that promote dialogue about diversity and how it contributes to success in business.
"We are extremely grateful to be recognized with this award, which is a wonderful reflection of the commitment that Mayo Clinic employees have made to maintaining an organizational culture that is diverse, respectful and based on our fundamental dedication to mutual respect," says Victor F. Trastek, M.D., chair, Board of Governors. "It is precisely this type of environment that enables us to work together, ensuring a level of teamwork that is critical in helping us remain focused on our mission of providing the best care to every patient, every day."
Mayo Clinic was a Gold sponsor of the Diversity Leadership Alliance Conference. Dr. Trastek spoke on a panel of CEOs at the event and addressed "teamwork" as one of the "best practices" involving diversity. Marion Kelly, Mayo Clinic's director of Community Relations, who is co-chair of the Diversity Leadership Alliance, was also nominated for the Diversity Champion award.
