SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - For the second consecutive year, Mayo Clinic in Arizona is recognized by U.S. News & World Report magazine as among the nation's top medical centers for Respiratory Disorders.
This annual, special edition of U.S. News & World Report will hit the newsstands on Monday, July 11, and again ranks Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., as one of the nation's best hospitals on its Honor Roll in its 2005 America's Best Hospitals' issue.
To make the Honor Roll, medical centers needed to rank near the top in at least six of 17 specialties, demonstrating "an unusual breadth of excellence." Mayo ranked high in 14 specialties, and ranked first or second in eight. These specialties, in addition to Respiratory Disorders, include Digestive Disorders, Gynecology, Heart and Heart Surgery, Hormonal Disorders, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and Rheumatology.
"External recognition of our efforts is very flattering, but the true measure of success at Mayo Clinic will always be the outstanding care that we deliver to our patients," said Victor F. Trastek, M.D., chair of the Board of Governors.
This year, just 176 hospitals scored high enough to rank in even a single specialty out of the field of more than 6,000 hospitals.
U.S. News has published rankings of America's medical centers for 16 years. In addition to a number of numerical factors, the hospitals selected were scored in terms of reputation, mortality rates, nursing and patient services. Categories related to technology and patient/community services were updated this year.
