ROCHESTER, Minn. — Four Harmony for Mayo concerts will be held in January on Mondays from 12:10 to 1 p.m. at different locations around the Mayo Clinic campus. A fifth concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, to commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. All Harmony for Mayo concerts are free and open to the public.
Jan. 2: Vicky Emerson will perform in Generose Atrium, Saint Marys Hospital, first floor, Generose Building, 1216 Second Street S.W.
Emerson holds degrees in music and arts administration. Her first performances and recordings focused on instrumental piano music, but her latest CD, "Reach," includes vocal, piano and guitar arrangements. She worked with Mathew Freed and Dean Magraw on the project.
Jan. 9: Cam Waters will perform acoustic guitar and vocal music in Barbara Woodward Lips Atrium, subway level, Rochester Methodist Hospital, Charlton Building, 10 Third Ave. N.W.
Originally from Iowa, Cam Waters has spent more than 20 years crisscrossing the country to perform in coffeehouses, clubs, concert halls and festivals. His style includes arrangements of rural blues, jug band songs and American folk music. Waters' most recent recording is called "Central Standard." He recently moved to Rochester.
Jan. 16: Twin Cities Community (TCC) Gospel Choir will perform at the annual Harmony concert commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event will occur at 7:30 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 400 Fifth Ave. S.W., in Rochester.
Founder Robert Robinson has directed the TCC Gospel Choir since 1990. The group includes singers of various musical experience, ethnic backgrounds and age groups. TCC Gospel Choir performs music that includes inspirational spirituals and contemporary gospel tunes. The choir promotes cross-cultural understanding through music and gives exuberant performances that celebrate the rich tradition of African-American religious music.
Jan. 23: Young artists of the Rochester Chamber Music Society will perform in Phillips Hall, Siebens Medical Education Building, first floor, 100 Second Ave. S.W.
This concert will include four young artists from the Rochester community accompanied by pianist Horacio Nuguid, artistic director of the Rochester Chamber Music Society. To bring more live classical music performances to the area, Nuguid organized the Rochester Chamber Music Society.
Jan. 30: Honors Choirs of Southeast Minnesota will perform in Hage Atrium, subway level, Siebens Medical Education Building, 100 Second Ave. S.W. The concert will feature the organization's Concert Choir.
Founded in 1992, Honors Choirs includes youth grades three through 12. This year's choirs include more than 275 children from 27 southeast Minnesota communities. The choirs rehearse at Bethel Lutheran Church in Rochester.
Harmony for Mayo, a music series for Mayo patients, visitors, staff and the public, is sponsored by Mayo Center for Humanities in Medicine. The series is presented in cooperation with Choral Arts Ensemble of Rochester. Harmony for Mayo concerts are broadcast live on Mayo Clinic's patient/visitor channel 10. The musical series is made possible by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Tomas Furth of Caracas, Venezuela, and New York City.
