ROCHESTER, Minn. — With influenza season under way, the Mayo Clinic influenza hotline is now offering self-care tips for people who have symptoms of influenza. The hotline number is 507-284-9353.
Abrupt onset of the following signs and symptoms may indicate influenza infection:
*High fever
*Persistent headache
*Dry cough
*Muscular aches and pains, especially in your back, arms and legs
*Fatigue and weakness
Contact your doctor immediately if you or your child have influenza symptoms and are at risk of a severe case of influenza or complications from the disease.
Your risk of complications is higher if:
*You are over age 65
*You have a chronic disease such as asthma, diabetes, kidney disease or heart failure
*You are immunosuppressed
*You are a child, age 6 to 23 months
The hotline provides these self-care tips:
*Stay away from work, school or day care until symptoms subside
*Drink plenty of liquids to help avoid dehydration
*Rest
*Take pain relievers cautiously as needed; read and follow label directions
If the symptoms started within the last 48 hours and haven't gotten better, contact your primary care provider to discuss treatment options.
The best way to avoid influenza is to get a flu shot. Flu shots are still available through Mayo Clinic primary care providers.
