SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Mayo Clinic Hospital in northeast Phoenix is one of the hospitals in the Phoenix area participating in the Stroke Check 2004 screening/informational program about stroke risk factors and warning signs. Stroke Check is a national program developed by Operation Stroke, the American Stroke Association and the American Society of Neuroradiology.
This program will take place Tuesday, May 4, 2004 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the main lobby of Mayo Clinic Hospital, located at 5777 E. Mayo Boulevard in northeast Phoenix.
Stroke Check is a drop-in program designed to help identify an individual's risk for stroke. It includes a stroke risk questionnaire, blood pressure and heart rate check, a video on stroke prevention, educational materials, and discussions sessions with a Mayo Clinic stroke neurologist.
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and a leading cause of serious long-term disability. Every 53 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke, and of the 600,000 people annually who will suffer a stroke, almost 160,000 of them will die. It is estimated that the annual economic cost of stroke in the U.S. is $49 billion.
