ROCHESTER, Minn. — Four Harmony for Mayo concerts will be held in January on Mondays from 12:10 to 1 p.m. in various locations throughout Mayo Clinic's campus. Also, on Jan. 17, an evening concert will be held to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. All Harmony for Mayo concerts are free and open to the public.
January 3: Benjamin Marti will perform classical piano music in Hage Atrium, subway level, Siebens Medical Education Building, 100 Second Ave. S.W.
Marti is a recent graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in music. During his time at Gustavus, Marti studied abroad at the Vienna Conservatory of Music and the Institute for European Studies. He is currently a member of several rock and jazz groups that play in St. Peter and Mankato, Minn.
January 10: Jane Belau and Bruce Rohde will perform a piano duo in Nathan Landow Atrium, subway level, Gonda Building, 100 Third Ave. S.W.
Bruce Rohde works at Mayo Clinic. He is also the Director of Music and Senior Choir Director at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rochester. Jane Belau is a life long musician, composer, writer and artist who currently serves on the Minnesota State Arts Board. The two co-chaired ArtsoberFest, a month-long celebration of the Arts in Rochester. The two also serve as co-chairs of the Mayor's Commission on the Arts for 2005 in Rochester. The duo will perform a variety of songs including popular classics, holiday favorites, show tunes, patriotic songs, old-time polkas and waltzes.
January 17: The Twin Cities Community (TCC) Gospel Choir will perform a special Martin Luther King Jr. commemorative choral concert at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ United Methodist Church, 400 Fifth Ave. S.W.
Founder Robert Robinson has directed the TCC Gospel Choir since 1990. The group includes singers of various musical experience, ethnic backgrounds and age groups. The TCC Gospel Choir performs songs ranging from inspirational spirituals to contemporary gospel tunes. The choir is dedicated to promoting cross-cultural understanding through music and is known for exuberant performances that celebrate the rich tradition of African American religious music. Families and children of all ages are welcome to enjoy the event.
January 24: Young Artists of Rochester Chamber Music Society will perform classical music in Phillips Hall, first floor, Siebens Medical Education Building, 100 Second Ave. S.W.
The Rochester Chamber Music Society is dedicated to the art of intimate vocal and instrumental collaborations. Artistic Director Horacio Nuguid will lead a group of 11 young area musicians in works for cello, flute, harp and vocal octet by Battista, Brahms and Persichetti, among other composers.
January 31: Kent McWilliams and Martin Hodel will perform classical piano and trumpet music, in Hage Atrium, subway level, Siebens Medical Education Building, 100 Second Ave. S.W.
Pianist Kent McWilliams has enjoyed a successful and varied performing career since his debut with the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra. McWilliams recently joined the faculty of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., as a Professor of Piano Performance. Martin Hodel, a native of Harlan, Ky., is an active soloist and freelance trumpeter who often performs in the trumpet section of the Minnesota Orchestra and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. Hodel teaches trumpet and music theory at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.
Harmony for Mayo, a music series for Mayo patients, visitors, staff and the public, is sponsored by Mayo Center for Humanities in Medicine. The series is presented in cooperation with Choral Arts Ensemble of Rochester. Harmony for Mayo concerts are broadcast live on Mayo Clinic's patient/visitor channel 10. The musical series is made possible by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Tomas Furth of Caracas, Venezuela, and New York City.
