ROCHESTER, Minn. — Three Harmony for Mayo concerts will be held in October on Mondays in various locations throughout Mayo Clinic's campus. All Harmony for Mayo concerts are free and open to the public.
Oct. 11: Vocalist Prudence Johnson will perform jazz classics from 12:10 to 1 p.m. The performance will occur in Nathan Landow Atrium, subway level, Gonda Building, 100 Third Ave. S.W. The performance will include pieces by George Gershwin, Harold Arlen and others.
Johnson's talents have taken her from small nightclubs to Carnegie Hall and venues across the world. She has released seven solo recordings including "Songs of Greg Brown," "Little Dreamer," and "Moon Country." Recently she collaborated with four Minnesota composers to create a collection of songs based on the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay. The recording will be released in fall 2004. Johnson graduated in 1998 from Hamline University and enjoys a steady schedule of concert appearances across the United States.
Oct. 18: "Meditation & Memorial," a commemorative concert featuring the Motet Choir of Calvary Episcopal Church, will be held at 7:30 p.m. The performance will occur at Saint Marys Hospital Chapel, first floor, Domitilla Building, 1216 Second Street S.W. The concert will feature music that invites both peaceful contemplation and remembrance of those recently deceased. The program will include Faure's "Requiem" among other works, and a Mayo chaplain will offer words of comfort.
The Motet Choir has had a longstanding presence in Rochester. Founded as a parish choir more than 140 years ago, the group has been led by many gifted conductors, including well-known choral composer Gerald Near. The Motet Choir sings in weekly services, carries out liturgical functions throughout the year and performs major works by Alain, Charpentier, Faure, Mozart and Vivaldi. The group is directed by Brian Williams.
Oct. 25: Choral Arts Ensemble will perform choral music from 12:10 to 1 p.m. The performance will be held in Hage Atrium, subway level, Siebens Medical Education Building, 100 Second Ave. S.W. The program will include music of the harvest season, songs of evening, spirituals, and folk songs.
Choral Arts Ensemble of Rochester is committed to commissioning and performing new works and providing listeners with an outstanding choral repertoire. The Ensemble presents five programs each season in the Rochester area performing music that encompasses all periods and styles. In October 2001, Choral Arts Ensemble made its debut with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO) at the Ordway Center in Saint Paul. Since then the group has performed two concerts with the SPCO. Founded in 1985 by Rick Kvam, the 40-voice choir is directed by Michael Culloton.
Harmony for Mayo, a music series for Mayo patients, visitors, staff and the public, is sponsored by Mayo Center for Humanities in Medicine. The series is presented in cooperation with Choral Arts Ensemble of Rochester. Harmony for Mayo concerts are broadcast live on Mayo Clinic's patient/visitor channel 10. The musical series is made possible by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Tomas Furth of Caracas, Venezuela, and New York City.
