The Economic Impact of Mayo Clinic on the Arizona Economy
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Mayo Clinic has unveiled a Master Plan that will serve as the framework for the institution's growth in the Valley over the next four decades. The plan focuses on the integration of key services to create efficiencies and conveniences for patients.
Implementation of the Master Plan depends upon continued growth of patient demand and philanthropic support to help fund construction activity.
"This 40-year Master Plan demonstrates Mayo Clinic's long term commitment to providing medical care in the Valley and to working closely with business, academic and government entities here," said Victor F. Trastek, M.D., chair, Board of Governors, Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. "Over the coming decades, our goal is to be one of the premier academic medical center in the Southwest region. Providing the best care for our patients is the focus of Mayo Clinic and the basis of all our plans."
A thorough analysis conducted by Mayo Clinic shows that the most efficient method of sustaining the mission to provide the best care for its patients is to integrate acute care services and a significant portion of its specialized outpatient care near Mayo Clinic Hospital in northeast Phoenix.
The comprehensive Master Plan outlines development on the 210-acre site of Mayo Clinic Hospital near Mayo Boulevard and the Loop 101 Freeway in northeast Phoenix, and at the 180-acre site of the Mayo Clinic outpatient facility at 13400 E. Shea Boulevard in Scottsdale.
"To provide the best care for our patients and to create operational efficiency for the entire medical practice, we will, over time, locate specialized outpatient and acute care services at the Phoenix campus near the hospital," said Dr. Trastek. "This phased growth plan will eliminate the need for many of our patients, physicians, researchers and educators to commute between our two campuses."
During the next four decades, the Master Plan calls for potential development at the Phoenix campus that could include clinical buildings, a second hospital, buildings to house research, education and administrative functions, residential units for medical staff and students, and a hotel in addition to the existing hospital at the Phoenix campus. The Scottsdale campus will emphasize the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center and enhanced research activities including expansion of the Samuel C. Johnson Medical Research Building.
Construction is currently underway on a 39,000 square-foot Administrative Services Building, an 11,350 square-foot Data Center, and a 9,000 square-foot expansion to the Radiology department at the Phoenix campus. These projects are estimated for completion by year-end. The next building project will be a hospital based specialty clinic, which will begin when philanthropic support is secured.
Since opening in 1987, Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale has provided medical care for more than 600,000 patients including people from all 50 states and 80 countries. When the Clinic opened, there were 42 physicians and 220 support personnel. Today, the institution comprises 280 physicians and a support staff of nearly 4,000.
