Stroke Check 2003 Provides Screening and Information About Stroke

Mayo Clinic Hospital one of several local hospitals participating

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., April 17, 2003– Mayo Clinic Hospital in northeast Phoenix is one of the hospitals in the greater Phoenix area participating in the Stroke Check 2003 screening/informational program about stroke risk factors and warning signs. Stroke Check is a national program developed by Operation Stroke, the American Stroke Association and the American Society of Neuroradiology.

This program will take place Thursday, May 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the main lobby of Mayo Clinic Hospital, located at 5777 E. Mayo Boulevard in northeast Phoenix.

Stroke Check is a drop-in program designed to help identify an individual's risk for stroke. It includes a stroke risk questionnaire, blood pressure and heart rate check, a video on stroke prevention, educational materials, and a brief review the stroke risk questionnaire results with a stroke neurologist.

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and a leading cause of serious long-term disability. Every 53 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke, and of the 600,000 people annually who will suffer a stroke, almost 160,000 of them will die. It is estimated that the annual economic cost of stroke in the U.S. is $49 billion.
