Mayo Clinic Announces November "Harmony for Mayo" Concerts

Monday, October 27, 2003

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Four Harmony for Mayo concerts will be held in November on Mondays from 12:10 to 1 p.m. in various locations throughout Mayo Clinic's campus. All Harmony for Mayo concerts are free and open to the public.

Nov. 3: The Rivers Voice, presenting American folk songs, will perform in Nathan Landow Atrium, subway level, Gonda Building, 100 Third Ave. S.W.

Trish and Richard Bruxvoort Colligan are the vocal/instrumental duo named The River's Voice. Trish's piano and Richard's guitar supply the backdrop for their smooth duet vocals, comprised of their original songs and familiar favorites by artists such as Carole King and James Taylor.

Nov. 10: The Saint Paul Conservatory of Music pianists will perform in Hage Atrium, subway level, Siebens Medical Education Building, 100 Second Ave. S.W.

The pianists in this concert are members of the Saint Paul Conservatory of Music's High School Honors Program and will perform works by Beethoven, Chopin, Haydn and Schubert.

As a non profit community music school and performing arts program, The Saint Paul Conservatory of Music offers comprehensive musical education for all ages. Programs include individual instruction for piano, strings, woodwinds, brass, recorder, guitar, voice and jazz piano, among other music training opportunities.

Nov. 17: Monroe Crossing, presenting bluegrass music, will perform in Phillips Hall, Siebens Medical Education Building, 100 Second Ave. S.W.

Lisa Fuglie, playing the fiddle and the mandolin, has excelled on all stringed instruments. A stellar vocalist, she is also a creative songwriter, solo performer, studio musician and educator.

Art Blackburn, singer, brings to the band 30 years of experience and a true love for the roots of bluegrass music. His creative persistence was the genesis of Monroe Crossing. Today, his powerful voice, delicate flat-picking and thoughtful writing lend an originality to the tradition upon which the band is founded.

Matt Thompson, playing twin fiddle, is a singer and songwriter and also the band's emcee.

Graham Sones, playing the banjo, not only sets the tone for the band, but contributes to the finesse and nuance of Monroe Crossing's contemporary sound.

Mark Anderson, playing the bass guitar, is acknowledged as one of the Midwest's elite bluegrass players and came to the band after years of playing the bass guitar and drums.

Nov. 24: Jeffrey Van, playing classical guitar, will perform in Phillips Hall, Siebens Medical Education Building, 100 Second Ave. S.W.

As guitarist and composer, Van has premiered over 50 works for guitar, including four concertos and a variety of chamber music. He has performed in Carnegie Hall, London's Wigmore Hall and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Van has been featured on many National Public Radio broadcasts, including "Saint Paul Sunday," has made several solo and ensemble recordings and has taught master classes throughout the United States.

Harmony for Mayo, a music series for Mayo patients, visitors and staff is sponsored by Mayo Clinic Center for Humanities in Medicine. The series is presented in cooperation with Chorale Arts Ensemble of Rochester, and is made possible by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Tomas Furth of Caracas, Venezuela, and New York City.
