ROCHESTER, Minn. — As part of the Fuad Mansour Named Visiting Professor Program, Roberto Chené, director of the Southwest Center for Intercultural Leadership in Albuquerque, N.M, will present "Building Community through Mentorship," at Mayo Clinic on Saturday, Nov. 1. The program will take place in Phillips Hall, Siebens Building, 100 Second Ave. S.W., Rochester, and will include a continental breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and lunch at noon. The event is free and open to staff, patients, visitors and the community. Participants should RSVP to Nicole Babcock at 507-266-2294 or babcock.nicole@mayo.edu. The program includes two workshops:
* 9 a.m. to noon — "The Role of Adults as Mentors" (for adults)
* 12:30 to 2 p.m. — "Strengthening the Youth/Adult Community" (for youth and adults)

Mr. Chené's work explores the process of building intercultural and intergenerational relationships and leadership necessary to strengthen communities. Chené will use interactive exercises to help participants better understand and develop effective mentoring styles and practical interpersonal skills. Adults are invited to attend the entire program. Youth are encouraged to participate during lunch and the afternoon workshop.

The Diversity Council and other local organizations will provide information about local programs related to diversity and mentorship. The Diversity Council will offer an interactive demonstration on reducing prejudice, from noon to 12:30 p.m. and from 2 to 2:30 p.m.

The Fuad Mansour Named Visiting Professor Program celebrates the life of Fuad Mansour, a Mayo employee who made major contributions to both Mayo Clinic and the Rochester community. Mansour died Jan. 26, 1997, after a battle with cancer. The purpose of the lectureship is to promote peace, cultural diversity, youth-related education and mentorship activities. The annual lectureship series is managed by Mayo Center for Humanities in Medicine and funded through gifts from Mansour's friends and family.

The Mayo Clinic Center for Humanities in Medicine integrates the arts, history and ethics in the medical environment to support the Mayo ideal that the needs of the patient come first.
