SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., May 16, 2002 – Mayo Clinic Hospital in northeast Phoenix is one of the hospitals in the greater Phoenix area participating in the Stroke Check 2002 screening/informational program about stroke risk factors and warning signs. Stroke Check is a national program developed by Operation Stroke, the American Stroke Association and the American Society of Neuroradiology.
This drop-in program at Mayo Clinic Hospital will take place Thursday, May 23, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. in the main lobby. Mayo Clinic Hospital is located at 5777 E. Mayo Boulevard in northeast Phoenix. Stroke Check is a drop-in program designed to help identify an individual's risk for stroke. The program includes a stroke risk questionnaire, blood pressure and heart rate check, a video on stroke prevention, educational materials, and a brief review the stroke risk questionnaire results with a neurologist. Stroke is America's number three killer and its number one cause of admissions to long term care. Every 53 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke and of the 600,000 people who will suffer a stroke, almost 160,000 of them will die. Yet, in an American Stroke Association survey of Maricopa County residents conducted in 1999, 42% of those surveyed were not aware of any stroke symptoms and 32% of those polled felt there was nothing that could be done to reduce the risk of stroke.
