Hugh Downs to Moderate Community Panel Discussion Addressing End-of-Life Issues

Free For Your Health event scheduled at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale on Thursday, Jan. 24

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Jan. 10, 2002 - Veteran television broadcaster and former host of ABC's 20/20, Hugh Downs, will be the guest moderator at a free, community education panel discussion and seminar at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale on Thursday, Jan. 24.

From Here to Eternity: Ethical Considerations Along the Way will be presented by Mayo Center for Humanities in Medicine from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. as part of its continuing For Your Health seminar series.

Following opening remarks from Downs, panelists will engage in discussions relating to managing physical and emotional suffering, advance directives, living wills and ways that fears impact bioethical decisions. Panelists include:

  • Susan Goldwater, Executive Director, Hospice of the Valley
  • Jane Maienschein, Ph.D., Regents Professor of Philosophy, Arizona State University
  • Sister Carol Taylor, Ph.D., Director of Clinical Bioethics, Georgetown University

Questions from guests will be addressed throughout the presentation, which will take place in Ashton B. Taylor Auditorium at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale, 13400 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale. Complimentary refreshments will be served, and seating is limited.
