Mayo Clinic Hosting Conference on the Contribution of Spiritual and Religious Research to the Science and Practice of Medicine

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Mayo Clinic is hosting the 2002 Mayo Spiritual Care Research Conference, "The Contribution of Spiritual and Religious Research to the Science and Practice of Medicine," to bring together some of North America's foremost experts to discuss research and practice applications in spirituality and religion.

WHEN/WHERE: Thursday and Friday, Nov. 7-8, 2002 Mayo Clinic, Phillips Hall, first floor, Siebens Building, 200 First Street S.W., Rochester, Minn.

WHAT: The conference highlights Mayo Clinic's focus on the importance of total patient care while addressing research on spirituality in patient care. This conference is designed to: o Promote research on spiritual care. o Disseminate research findings evaluating the contributions of spiritual care to the practice of medicine. o Increase interdisciplinary dialogue about research practices, clinical applications and spiritual experiences. o Encourage the advancement of evidence-based spiritual care.

WHO: Featured faculty among the many presenters at the two-day conference include:

Harold G. Koenig, M.D., MHSc, is director and founder of the Center for the Study of Religion/Spirituality in Health at Duke University Medical Center, and holds associate professorships in psychiatry and medicine. Dr. Koenig has published extensively in the fields of mental health, geriatrics and religion and is recognized in research on spirituality and medicine.

Martin E. Marty, Ph.D., is the Fairfax M. Cone Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago where he taught religious history for 35 years. Dr. Marty is the George B. Caldwell Senior-in-Residence at the Park Ridge Center for the Study of Health, Faith and Ethics, an institute he co-founded 20 years ago, and has authored over 50 books. Dr. Marty recently served as interim president of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.
