ROCHESTER, Minn. — Mayo Clinic announces four November "Harmony for Mayo" concerts. Concerts are on Mondays at 12:10 p.m. in various locations throughout the Mayo Clinic campus.
The concerts are free and open to the public. No tickets are needed. Audience members are welcome to bring lunch to the midday performances.
Nov. 4: Jazz Deluxe blends the guitar, chromatic harmonica and skilled vocals to produce melodies that span the decades of swing and jazz music. The performance will be in the Barbara Woodward Lips Atrium at Rochester Methodist Hospital, Charlton Building, subway level and will include selections from Ellington and Gershwin, among others. The Charlton Building, part of Rochester Methodist Hospital, is located at 10 Third Ave. N.W.
Nov. 11: Phil Heywood returns to share his acoustic fingerstyle-guitar music. A former national fingerpicking champion, Heywood's lyrical style and playful rhythmic drive are popular draws for listeners. He has accompanied Chet Atkins, and his songs are frequently played on the NPR Morning Show. The concert will be in the Hage Atrium, subway level, Siebens Medical Education Building, 100 Second Ave. S.W.
Nov. 18: Bluegrass musical group, Monroe Crossing, will perform in the Hage Atrium, subway level, Siebens Medical Education Building, 100 Second Ave. S.W., with selections from traditional bluegrass standards and original compositions. Contemporary, gospel and instrumental pieces will also be presented with the blending of musical instruments such as fiddles, mandolins, banjos, drums and flat-picking.
Nov. 25: The George Maurer Group, led by pianist George Maurer, performs traditional jazz, swing, blues and bebop music. The song inspirations range from omelets to 16th century love sonnets, and the performance will include musical tributes to classics such as George and Ira Gershwin and Duke Ellington. The concert will be in Phillips Hall, Siebens Medical Education Building, 100 Second Ave. S.W.
"Harmony for Mayo," a music series for Mayo patients, visitors, staff and the public, is sponsored by the Mayo Center for Humanities in Medicine. The series is presented in cooperation with the Choral Arts Ensemble of Rochester; Rick Kvam, music director, and Terri Skelton, executive director. The series is made possible by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Tomas Furth of Caracas, Venezuela, and New York City.
