ROCHESTER, Minn. — Erik Lindbergh, a commercial pilot and flight instructor and the grandson of Charles Lindbergh, will speak at Mayo Clinic on Monday, Oct. 7. Lindbergh's appearance kicks off a week of celebration for Mayo Clinic Heritage Days — Living the Legacy, an annual event that honors the men and women, past and present, who represent the "Face of Mayo."
Activities run from Oct. 7 through 11, and include historical displays, guest lecturers and musical entertainment. Lindbergh will chronicle his family's experiences in aviation and his grandfather's ties with Mayo Clinic. The presentation is free and open to Mayo Clinic employees and the public. He is scheduled to speak at 7 p.m. in Phillips Hall, Siebens Building, 100 Second Ave. S.W.
To mark the 75th anniversary of his grandfather's Spirit of St. Louis transatlantic flight, Lindbergh recreated the record-breaking flights of the Spirit of St. Louis earlier this year. He embarked on his solo journey in a modern single-engine monoplane, flying from San Diego to St. Louis, to New York and Paris to illustrate the human spirit ability to dream, innovate and achieve one's goals against many odds.
A graduate of Emery Aviation College, where he received his aeronautical science degree, Lindbergh serves as a trustee and vice president of the X Prize Foundation, a nonprofit organization that stimulates the creation of a new generation of launch vehicles designed to carry passengers into space. He also is the director of the Lindbergh Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to furthering his grandfather's belief in creating a balance between technological advancement and environmental preservation. ###
